Review
"The recipes in Practical Paleo are nothing short of exceptional. I say this without hesitation because I tasted every single dish in this book. Watching Diane cook was inspiring, and I'm proud to say I learned much more about cooking just from being in the kitchen with her. This book will not only feed your brain with knowledge of health, but also nourish your body with outstanding recipes."—Hayley Mason, co-author of Make it Paleo
"Practical Paleo is a gold mine for those new to the Paleo diet or struggling to integrate it into their everyday lives. I've always believed that personalization is the key to long-term success, and Diane's 30-Day Meal Plans will help you achieve just that. Practical Paleo will prove to be a resource I recommend to my patients and online community again and again."—Chris Kresser, LA.c, integrative-medicine practitioner

I found Diane when I was having severe digestive troubles earlier in the year. My stomach cramped up and I experienced awful reflux every time I ate. Sometimes when it would really flare up, I'd have to fast for an entire weekend to feel better. I was regularly constipated for up to TWO WEEKS at time (as in, no bowel movements for 14 days - awful)! I saw a holistic doctor but licorice root, marshmallow root, natural laxatives and magnesium did nothing to solve my problems. Four hundred bucks on holistic supplements later, I found Diane's podcast. Through listening to her podcasts with her enthusiastic teammate Liz Wolfe, I started adding kombucha and sauerkraut to my diet, cutting out nuts and never, ever eating gluten. It took time for me to find what my exact triggers were, but now I know that I have an over-exposure allergy to eggs and that raw nuts can mess me up for days. I can tolerate gluten once in a while but after seeing how flat my tummy got when I avoided it, I don't indulge anymore.
I listen to their podcasts every week and wasn't sure if I needed this book since I already own so many Paleo books. Boy, was I wrong - if only this book had come out first, I wouldn't have needed any of the other ones! The section on poop alone is life-changing!
What really stands out here are the customized meal plans for the specific issues you might be facing. I found myself wanting to copy each of them and hand them out to family and friends. The tear-out guides, as other reviewers have mentioned, are also fantastic. The recipes are so incredible - my man and I made the artichoke lemon chicken last night, as well as the chocolate coconut cookies. I also spent my time elbow-deep in cabbage and carrots to make the sauerkraut.
Diane is so knowledgeable and delivers the information in easy-to-understand action steps. This book is perfect for beginners and even great for the seasoned Paleo eater. The photographs are lovely and the recipes are easy to follow. A truly beautiful book well worth the list price and more. If I hadn't found Diane and Liz, I would have definitely seen a GI specialist by now and wiped out whatever good gut flora I had left with antibiotics. That being said, there is so much more covered here than you can get in a forty-minute podcast. Well worth the money spent.
I bought the book in paperback to have and to hold - Kindle lovers may want to pick up the Kindle version for portability reasons - this is a heavy book and it could be useful to have recipes at your fingertips. That being said, I just took a picture of the recipes I wanted to make on my phone and took that with me. The quality of the physical book is very high and will not disappoint.
Before going to the physician, go practical! Practical Paleo, that is. :)
First of all, the book is a work of art. If you've only bought the electronic version, I highly recommend getting a copy of the print book because it could grace your coffee table as well as any fancy, hard-bound art or culture book. The food photography is beautiful and the book is loaded with colorful--but more importantly--*helpful*--charts, diagrams, and illustrations.
Second, even if you have no interest in transitioning to a Paleo-style diet, this book is worth its price as a cookbook alone. I dare you to serve these recipes to anyone who thinks a meal is not complete without pasta, bread, or rice. They will be deliciously satisfied by meat, vegetables, and natural fats. You don't have to be a 5-star chef to make delicious meals at home. When you use real, whole, unprocessed foods and know your way around a spice rack, it's easy to create drool-worthy meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, even on busy weeknights.
Third, and most important, this book is an indispensable guide to the whys and wherefores of the Paleo approach, and how to tailor it for everything from shedding a couple of pounds to reversing debilitating conditions like MS, chronic fatigue syndrome, and the kind of digestive distress that literally prevents some people from leading normal lives. Diane has absolutely outdone herself here. In language that is simple to understand but detailed enough to cover all the bases, she outlines the connections between our modern diets and lifestyles--high in refined carbohydrates, inflammation-promoting vegetable oils, and all manner of fake and processed foods, and low on good quality sleep, stress management, fresh air, and calm, positive mental outlooks--and the myriad health conditions we're experiencing as a population. Most of these, from heart disease to rheumatoid arthritis to type 2 diabetes, are largely preventable and if you're already suffering from them, switching to a Paleo approach stands a great chance of reversing them. (As a professional nutritionist, I'm not allowed to say "cure," but I would if I could. That's how powerful these dietary and lifestyle changes can be.) If you've been doing "all the right things" (basing your diet on starchy carbohydrates and eating lots of whole grains and soy, consuming only fat-free dairy, throwing out your egg yolks, eating skinless chicken instead of red meat and pork, and spending hours and hours on a treadmill or elliptical machine) but have failed to see any improvements in your health or weight, do your body (and spirit!) a favor and GET. THIS. BOOK.
If you want to dive deep into the biochemistry and human physiology that underpins advice to avoid grains, legumes, and some forms of dairy, there are other books that are more scientifically oriented and better suited for that. But if you're looking for a real world, down-to-earth guide that will give you all the information you need to get started--including detailed 30-day meal plans and supplement suggestions for 11 different goals/health conditions--this is for you. This is also the kind of book you can give your mother/brother/friend/coworker -- the one who notices how much better you've been feeling (and looking) and who keeps asking you questions about "how you did it," but whose eyes glaze over the minute you start talking about healing your gut.
Diane could not have made this any easier for you -- recipes, meal plans, supplement suggestions, and even substitutions here and there for variations to address specific conditions or food sensitivities. She's done all the heavy lifting here. Short of coming to your house and cooking *for* you, she's given you everything you need to jump in and FEEL BETTER.
If you're suffering from any sort of digestive problems, issues with blood sugar regulation, energy crashes, brain fog, allergies, or an autoimmune condition, you owe it to yourself to get this book. You *can* help yourself, and it can be done without expensive lifelong prescriptions and doctor visits so frequent you think your copays have probably put your MD's kids through college. Take charge of your own health. Start with your diet. You don't have to spend your days in pain and discomfort. You *can* feel like a million bucks. Let Practical Paleo be what sets you on your way there.

The recipes do not skimp on flavour or portions.
La seconde partie contient de très bonne recette qui sont assez simple d'exécution.
This book is, hands down, the best paleo book I've bought to-date (and I've bought an impressive stack)! If you're looking for a "first" paleo cookbook, this is the one as it has menus, spice blends, pantry lists, and other information I found to be very helpful when first starting out with the paleo diet in addition to many wonderful recipes.
For me, it was just the right explanation of how to make paleo work for me and I've recommended it to friends and family since. Great book!
