Top reviews from the United States

I seldom review books as I find that other reviews are sufficient. Although that's true for this book , I feel compelled to add my voice to those who find this a great Sharepoint book.

Over the last 6 months or so I've spent some time using or learning SharePoint, as such I have an "okay" idea of what SharePoint is, and an understanding of general end user functionality as well as the business value it provides. However as a Business Analyst it was important for me to understand how Sharepoint components fit together. I've waded through the Microsoft sites, Sharepoint blogs, and two other books but just encountered a list of features and marketing mumbo jumbo. After reading this book, I was able to develop a mental model of Sharepoint 2010, and understand how the major Sharepoint components/concepts fit together to deliver value to users.

If you are a business analyst and want to gain command of sharepoint, I strongly recommend that you start with this book, and then I would strongly recommend
Essential SharePoint 2010: Overview, Governance, and Planning (Addison-Wesley Microsoft Technology Series)  Thank you Mr. Cawood.

As is the norm with anything I order from Amazon, the book arrived in record time, well packaged and in perfectly new condition. I should probably mention that I'm an Amazon Prime member, so pretty much everything arrives in two days! I did a fair amount of research (via Amazon reviews and other sites) before buying this particular SharePoint guide, and it was time well spent. The book offers a concise overview of everything that SharePoint 2010 has to offer, which is useful to a new user like myself. I don't consider it a good 'How To' resource, but definitely a valuable addition to my library. So I developed a routine to compensate: first I read about a particular feature of the software for understanding, then I use Google to search for the 'step-by-step' instructions! :)

My fault but not very useful as a stand alone for me

Book arrived yesterday and when opened it, the pages were faded. No, this was not a used book, I bought it new! The pages and the pictures in the book looked as if there were copied from the original. There are icons and pictures in the book that look as if there were originally supposed to be in color. In fact, some of the pictures and illustrations are just play hard to read any detail that would make them usable. Seriously considering returning the book.

I ordered 2 books from Amazon based on the reviews that were published ... I found out that the reviews are not reflective of the books in any way ... i ended up returning the worse of the two .. I should have returned both ... this book has no substance at all .. mere introductions to topics; if you are someone who likes to read a book for detailed instructions on how to do something .. this book is not for you; if you just need to be introduced to concepts & then you are willing to look to another book .. for example a WROX or step by step book .. then this book is ok ..very disappointing book .......

The book is good if you know a lot about sharepoint but if you are just getting to know share point it doesn't help much. It tells you how to do things but never explains why you would want to do it or exactly what it is.

No book can make you proficient in working with a new application just by reading about the where's, why's and how to's. At some point you need to go through the pain of trial & error to gain the familiarity necessary to accomplish anything tangible.

If you have a working knowledge of SharePoints basic functionality, then this book does a very nice job of tying together the knowledge acquired from trial & error to catapult you to the next level quickly to create an efficient, useful centralized location to manage, collaborate and communicate critical data & information out to targeted recipients.

A pretty basic book about SharePoint that is probably only good for those very new to the product. Unfortunately, it is probably something that most would read and then never return to, however it does more than adequately cover what SharePoint is and how to use it. The majority of the book is spent explaining the options available in SharePoint rather than going into how they can actually be used. This is common drawback I find of most 'introduction' style SharePoint books. It is aimed to serve a specific niche and it does that well enough.

The book is easy to read and logical to follow. It does draw the distinction SharePoint Foundation and Server but concentrates most of its time on SharePoint Server.

So a worthwhile book if you have never used SharePoint but unfortunately once you have digested the material in here there is little chance that you'll need to go back, which is a pity. It is a book more aimed at illustrating all the options in SharePoint than actually showing you how to employ these to solve business problems, which is as I mentioned, a drawback of many books of this ilk.

I was hired for a mandate to do acceptance tests on a Sharepoint 2010 application. I also had to ensure a good communication between the IT departement and the users. I knew very litle on Sharepoint at the beginning of the mandate. I read it from A to Z and I find it very useful to master what I had to do in Sharepoint.
